Who is Tyler, the Creator?
Tyler, the Creator, whose real name is Tyler Okonma, was born on March 6, 1991 and is currently 31 years old. The rapper and record producer was born in Hawthorne, CA. An early contributor to the music collective Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill Them All, better known as Odd Future, Tyler released his first album as a solo artist in 2009. His music truly spans across many genres, including horrorcore, alternative hip hop, R&B, jazz rap, and neo soul.
Tyler’s early releases, Bastard in 2009 and Goblin in 2011 are gritty and hardcore. He later turned to a more alternative rap style, releasing Wolf in 2013, and then Cherry Bomb, an album closely influenced by jazz. Wolf led to his first headlining tour throughout the United States.
Heavily influenced by Pharrell Williams, Tyler, the Creator is also a prominent producer, largely self-producing his own tracks and those for Odd Future. Other major influences in his work include Missy Elliot, Busta Rhymes, and Kanye West, who he has also collaborated with.
Tyler, the Creator, has won two Grammy awards, both for Best Rap Album. In 2020, Tyler’s album, IGOR, won the award, and in 2022, Call Me If You Get Lost followed suit. Tyler, the Creator was also nominated for an additional Grammy with frequent collaborator Frank Ocean. He has also won a BRIT Award, three BET Hip Hop awards, and an MTV Video Music Award.
