Who is Retro Speq?
You might think that R&B trios are a thing of the past. Retro Speq is here to prove you wrong. Retro Speq is a R&B group from St. Petersburg, FL, that got their first break opening for artists such as SWV, Big Bub, Tyrese, and Sisqo. They later landed an independent deal with Magnum Records but didn’t see the success they were hoping for from the label. The trio are actually cousins and are inspired by the likes of Prince, The Ojays, New Edition, and many more.
After moving to Atlanta, they caught the eyes of Ichiban Records and went on a small tour with Lil Jon and the Eastside Boyz. However, just like with Magnum Records, their initial buzz began to fizzle out. Constantly overlooked, Retro Speq decided to take things on independently. This year, they released their debut single as a group on all streaming platforms, Craze’. This track is the first taste of the group’s album that is slated for 2023.
Craze’ helped put ears back on the group, garnering attention for bringing back 90s and early 2000s R&B. Retro Speq isn’t stopping. Together with producer Jimmy “Slam” Jones, the group’s debut, self-titled album will be releasing early next year. Want to learn more about Retro Speq? Read this interview with them on the DCR blog.
