An Interview with Ali Rizvi of Control Shift
Control Shift is an electrifying alternative rock band based in the Los Angeles area. We sat down with guitarist, songwriter, and mastermind behind the project, Ali Rizvi to learn about his musical origins, what he’s currently listening to, and where his music is going in the future. Read for more!
Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?
Hi. My name is Ali Rizvi and I was born and raised in Karachi, Pakistan. I moved to the United States in 1999 when I got accepted at UMBC (University of Maryland Baltimore County). I currently reside in Los Angeles, California.
When did you start making music?
My father had an upright piano in the house, so I started fiddling with music pretty early. I would say by age ten I was composing music.
Who inspired you to start making music?
Both sets of grandparents were writers and poets. They always had Indian classical music playing in the background. My grandmother, at my mom’s side, also worked at a local radio station. They were a great source of inspiration and they are the reason for my creative side.
How would you describe your music style?
I would say it is progressive hard rock with deep and intellectual lyricism. My father, who is an engineer, always had very interesting books lying around. This is why I have always been interested in exploring deep and cerebral subjects such as science, philosophy, quantum mechanics and politics, just to name a few.
Who are you listening to now?
I’ve always been a huge fan of Trent Reznor and industrial music. These days I’m spinning the band HEALTH. Can’t wait to see them live this week!
What’s your best project or single so far?
My current band, Control Shift’s upcoming album “Per Aspera, Ad Astra,” is some of my best work. I also have to give credit to our singer M.T. Letsinger who has a very similar background in music as myself. He is one of the most talented singers I’ve worked with. I can’t wait for the world to hear what we have created here.
Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?
Our upcoming single, “Awake,” comes out May 20th. And our full length album, “Per Aspera, Ad Astra,” comes out later this year.
Have any shoutouts?
Shoutout to all my friends and family who have always supported my creative endeavors. This music is a tribute to them.
Look out for Control Shift’s upcoming single and album and stay up to date on their music on Spotify!
