Who is MCG?
MCG is a rapper and artist that brings an edge of visionary lyrical exploration and uninhibited musicianship to modern hip hop. Starting out by freestyling at the age of 14, he’s been making music for years. After being dubbed the “prodigal son” by a college newspaper, he found himself at home at a small record label. He went on to perform at cyphers in Brooklyn, New York, nurturing his talent and reaping the confidence and skill that would follow. Unfortunately, MCG’s world almost came crashing down when he experienced a medical catastrophe that threatened to paralyze him. After 17-hour surgery and 2 years of arduous recovery, he returned to his craft. This led him to focus on growing his audience digitally.
As a rapper, the self-styled dramatist coins catchy, poignant singles and epic long-form lyrical ventures that delve into metaphysical and relatable stories in an engaging, accessible manner. This blending of the complicated and the comforting connects on both a profoundly human and cosmic level, combining intellectualism and primal emotion to create a genre all of its own.
Collaboration is crucial and MCG’s releases showcase a cornucopia of multi-talented musicians, vocalists, music video directors, thespians, illustrators, and graphic designers to help bring each unique soundscape and story to life. Most notably, beatmaker Grieg, who is the drummer from rising Romanian band Gunshee, has proven irreplaceable in continuously elevating the MCG sound.
Outside the box and impossible to pigeonhole into one; every song bears his signature lyricism but utilizes a different musical style. MCG is influenced by David Bowie, Organized Konfusion, Norm MacDonald, Salvador Dali, MF DOOM, Ludwig Van Beethoven, and King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard. In short, when it comes to MCG; expect the unpredictable and predict the unexpected. Want to learn more about MCG? Check out this interview with DCR.
