Who is Young Devyn?
Young Devyn whose real name is Devyn Tyson is an up-and-coming rapper from Brooklyn, New York. In the Brooklyn drill scene, her songs are making waves. In addition to her influences from Nicki Minaj, Lauryn Hill, Lil Baby, and Cardi B, Devyn bases the lyrics of her songs on insights from her everyday conversations and life experiences. She believes that cursing is often used as a substitute for creative writing, so she does not use any profanity in her songs. Music has been a passion of hers since she was twelve years old. Taking advantage of her momentum in 2020, she released songs like Make It Hot. The drill song begins with 808 Melo’s famous tagline. Paying homage to other artists like the late Pop Smoke, Young Devyn makes sure to honor the genres she makes music in. 2019 and 2020 were big years for drill music in Brooklyn, New York. Currently, men dominate the drill music scene. Devyn has expressed her goals to make space for more women in the drill music scene.
Last year, she released her debut EP, appropriately titled Baby Goat, which combines her Soca sound with hip-hop lyricism. She teased that the EP’s upcoming singles like Secret and Entangle, despite falling into the camp of what Devyn considered “mainstream pop,” still have that Caribbean influence that kicked-start her career. “If you’re not from the Caribbean, you’re still able to understand it and enjoy it. So it transcends everywhere, and I think people are gonna love it. And that’s kind of like, a teaspoon of what, you know, my culture is really about”. Recently, she released a new EP called Women of Def Jam – Young Devyn that showcases both her well-crafted lyrics as well as her versatility.
She is not only setting trends but also leveling the playing field for female drill rappers. I’m excited to see her career take off! Want more from Young Devyn? Check out her website!
