An Interview with GenoDa1
Miami-Dade-based recording artist GenoDa1 is making his mark on the music scene. Despite enduring extreme hardships as a child, he has emerged as an accomplished rapper-songwriter who transcends genres while sharing personal stories through rap. We sat down with GenoDa1 to discuss his start making music, his style, and more.
Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?
What’s good family? I go by the name of GenoDa1 and I’m from Homestead Florida. It’s located in South Miami Dade county but I also represent Broward County as well. Broward County is definitely a second home.
When did you start making music?
Well, I’ve done music all my life but originally I was a basketball player from 9 years old all the way up till my senior year of Highschool. I played all different sports but basketball was my main sport since I was 9. Then after my senior year, I chose to quit basketball and follow my music dream in 2013. At first, I was just recording perfecting my craft, and mainly songwriting in Los Angeles because that’s where I went to college for 2 years but started taking my solo career seriously around 2015.
Who inspired you to start making music?
Jay- z, Kanye West, Lil Wayne, Drake, Nas, 50 Cent, J. Cole, Nipsey Hussle, Kendrick Lamar, Wu-Tang Clan, Mobb Deep, The Lox, DMX, Jeezy, and the list goes on and on but my main inspiration to start actually making music was Drake.
How would you describe your music style?
Versatile. You don’t know what sound you’re going to get from me. I love being unpredictable with my music working with different flows, sounds, and even melodies. And most importantly I have a story and I’m a gifted songwriter so all my songs are a reflection of what I’m going through at that point in time.
Who are you listening to now?
J. Cole, Kendrick, Drake, Ella Mai, Tory Lanez, The Weeknd, Pusha T, Summer Walker, Benny the Butcher, XXXTENTACION, and a lot of other artists.
What’s your best project or single so far?
By far my best project is my LP 3am Sessions I treat that project like it’s my baby. I love and cherish that project so much because I was going through a really bad break up and that project really helped therapeutically.
Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?
I’m working on some stuff. Don’t want to say too much.
Have any shoutouts?
Shout out to my engineer Richard Akam out of London! He’s the mastermind behind my music and shout out to my brother RunItBackYumi too. He’s out of Homestead Like me as well. That’s my brother we grew up together we’ve known each other since we were 5 years old and he’s doing his thing. And of course, shout out to all my producer and the people I work with. Without y’all, my music would not be gaining the attention it is now.
