SKTM Brings a Personal Touch to Dance Pop
A night out can begin with a simple impulse: leave the routine behind and find somewhere the music takes over. SKTM builds “Downtown in the City” around that feeling, pairing electronic dance production with a gritty, country-influenced vocal. Released June 5, 2026, the single is currently under consideration for a GRAMMY® nomination in Best Dance Pop Recording. It has not been nominated.
SKTM is the DJ and producer persona of T.J. McAloon, a Pittsburgh native based in Austin, Texas. His musical background spans grunge, pop punk, hip-hop, R&B, and emo. Years spent digging through music, curating playlists, and paying attention to how songs affect a room helped inform his move into DJing and production.
On “Downtown in the City,” that interest in shared musical experiences takes the form of festival-style rhythms, electronic builds, breakdowns, and drops. The production is designed around movement, while McAloon’s vocal adds a rougher texture to the electronic setting. Its country influence gives the performance character within the song’s dance-pop framework.
The lyrics return to images of downtown streets and summer heat, keeping the focus on the setting and sensation of a night in the city. Repetition helps anchor the track, giving its shifting electronic energy a familiar vocal center.
McAloon handled the song’s production, songwriting, vocals, mixing, and mastering. Recorded in Austin and completed in May 2026, the release reflects a project shaped by one artist across each stage of the recording process. Even the SKTM name carries a personal connection, referencing his family of four.
“Downtown in the City” brings those personal details into music intended for a communal setting. Its appeal starts with the invitation to move, with a vocal performance that gives listeners something human to connect with inside the electronic production.
