What is a Track ID?

ByDCR March 3, 2025March 3, 2025
What is a Track ID?

A Track ID is a unique identifier used by music streaming services and databases to distinguish between different pieces of music. It is crucial for rights management, royalty distribution, and ensuring that every play of a track is accurately tracked and attributed. For more tips like these, check out the dozens of free artist resources we offer.

The Function of Track IDs

Track IDs are used in digital music libraries to manage vast amounts of data and ensure that every track, no matter how similarly titled, is distinct from another.

Comparison with other IDs

Unlike the UPC (Universal Product Code) which identifies the product (album) or the ISRC (International Standard Recording Code) which tracks individual recordings, the Track ID is often platform-specific and used internally for data management.

Obtaining a Track ID

When you distribute music through digital distribution platforms, a Track ID is typically assigned to each song as part of the uploading process.

Increasing Spotify Traction

Spotify features such as Discovery Mode and its related playlists: Radio, Discover Weekly, Your Daily Mix, etc. includes tracks on a Track ID basis. With Discovery Mode, you can select all available Track IDs, which puts more versions of your song into the algorithm.

The accurate use of Track IDs is a foundational element in the digital music industry, ensuring that artists are correctly paid for the use of their music. If you like this guide and want to read more like this, check out DCR’s free artist resources.
