An Interview with Jennifer Klein
In today’s interview, we sit down with the remarkably talented indie singer and musician Jennifer Klein. Residing in Poway, CA, Klein’s passion for music blossomed at a young age, and she has crafted her skills through self-learning, inspiration from legendary artists like Jewel, and performing in and around San Diego. Alongside a fulfilling career in the Food Service Industry, Klein has released several albums and singles over the past 15 years. As she continues to write and perform, her recent shift in focus toward her music has allowed her to explore and create with renewed energy. Here, she shares insights about her creative process, challenges, inspirations, and upcoming projects.
Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
I live in Poway, CA (just outside of San Diego), and have lived in the San Diego area for over 30 years. I have been singing my entire life, taught myself guitar at 12 years old, and started writing original music in my twenties. I have had a long successful career in the Food Service Industry and am now working much less and focusing more on my music and family. I recorded three albums in Nashville back when you made CDs – around 15 years ago, and then restarted recording original songs over the past 8 years or so – with many of my recent singles being released within the last 5 years. I also play in a cover band (I do play my originals also) around San Diego as a trio (myself on guitar and vocals, keyboardist, and percussionist).
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
I believe it was Jewel who first inspired me to try writing my own songs – she was a local in the area and I saw her perform at a local coffee shop before she was famous. I thought she was an amazing songwriter and performer. I started writing in my early twenties.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
My biggest challenge is figuring out my original music after I create it – I feel like it gets created and then just sort of sits there (on the platforms I have it on and my website). I just sort of don’t feel like I’ve found a satisfying place that incorporates my original music, my love of performing and doing cover songs (which I used to hate doing, but now see that people love hearing songs they know, so it does bring me some joy….but not nearly as much as creating original music)
What is your favorite project or single you have released?
My song called Illusion.
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
My inspirations for most of my songs are my daughters, my husband, and spirituality (for lack of better word). Some of the artists that have inspired me are Sinead O’Connor, Jewel, Barbara Streisand, Van Morrison, Brandi Carlisle, (spelling?), Fleetwood Mac, Tracy Chapman, the Beatles, Adele, Taylor Swift, and many many more. I am listening to Van Morrison right now – he is an incredible songwriter.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
I usually feel very emotional when I write a song, and then I usually write lyrics and the music on my guitar at the same time. I might write the bulk of a song, and then come back to it over the next day or two to see if anything comes to me, write a bridge, or just make sure it feels complete.
Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!
I am about to release my original song called “Talk to You”. This song was inspired by my relationship with my husband.
What are your plans for 2023?
Releasing my single “Talk to You”, Recording and releasing a new song I wrote called “Boomerang”. Figuring out how to market my original music and learning the possibilities that are available. Figuring out how to find a place in my life for my cover band that brings me joy and financial success.
