Interview

An Interview with Fridaynite

ByDCR January 1, 2021December 31, 2020
Fridaynite

In 2016, Northern Virginia musician Fridaynite’s career began to take off after the release of his viral single Celly Blowing Up. Since then, he’s released a number of singles and a full length project, Friday, released on September 10, 2020. Fridaynite shared a look into his life, creative process, and more in this interview.

Hey Fridaynite, thanks for chatting with us. Where in the DMV are you from and how has it shaped you and your music?

Yeah of course, and I appreciate y’all having me. I’m from Northern Virginia. Where I’m from sports are a big thing so when I started not a lot of people were making music. The older I got the more people started making music and I think that’s fire. Though I was shaped more by listening to different music rather than the place around me.

Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?

I started making music when I was 10. I used to make songs on the T-Pain autotune app with my older brother and one day I decided to start recording. My mother bought me a USB mic. I’ll never forget that day, I recorded in my kitchen for hours. My older brother always pushed me and put me on to good music growing up and he recorded me a lot before he went off to college.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a musician?

Probably putting a lot of work into something and not getting the result you want. It can be discouraging but you just have to keep pushing.

Your career caught serious traction in 2016 with the release of Celly Blowing Up. Did you think that song was going to do as well as it did?

When I first made it I was in the basement with my boy Jordan. I remember us running around listening to it on the speakers and he went and stopped it midway through and said that “this is it”. At first I didn’t think anything of it but then it just started blowing up fast. It was a crazy moment now that I look back at it.

How has your music changed since releasing Celly Blowing Up?

I’ve matured way more and the style of music has changed drastically. I know what I’m doing now is way better and people will soon see.

What’s your favorite project or single you’ve made so far?

Don’t want to be the person that says every song, but I love all of them. That’s until I make another one and hate the one I released before that.

What’s the process behind working on a song like?

It’s simple for me. As soon as I hear the right beat, everything just clicks after. I just enjoy myself rather than try to make a “hit”.

Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?

I just dropped my album in September “Friday” but I got a lot of music and music videos coming 2021. Plus clothes and skits. I’ve also been doing this game show on IG live recently that’s been getting some buzz so I’ll be doing that as well. I’m seeing where every lane can take me.

What are your plans for 2021?

Staying as consistent as possible and really putting on my name. I want to be in it for the long run. Hopefully this COVID stuff goes away soon so we can get down to performing. That’s my favorite thing to do.

Have any shoutouts?

Yeah, shoutout to my family and supporters and shoutout to all my close people who push me to be better everyday. There’s not too many to name but y’all know who you are.
