With influences ranging from BTS and BIBI to Sade, Erykah Badu, and Beyoncé, AWUDI is crafting a sound shaped by both personal experience and vivid storytelling. In this interview, she opens up about her creative process, her inspirations, the challenges of building her career, and her plans to release her first EP in 2026.
Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is AWUDI, but y’all can call me Wu. I’m 21 years old, and I’m a singer-songwriter. I’m currently in school studying accounting, and alongside my artistry, I work full-time as a licensed realtor and mortgage loan originator.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And when did you start?
I officially started writing songs in 2020, when I was 16 years old, and all of the unreleased songs I’ve linked are from that time period. I’ve always known I wanted to work in the music or entertainment industries, and I’ve always loved to sing. Surprisingly, I didn’t seriously consider becoming a singer-songwriter until I became a fan of BTS, which people often find surprising.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
Being taken seriously, networking, and building a following.
What is your favorite project or single you have released?
SoundCloud in terms of songs, and Blame in terms of visuals.
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
My inspirations include BTS, 2007-era Keke Palmer, Pierce the Veil, Sade, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, BIBI, Rihanna, and Beyoncé.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
In the beginning, I used to write to beats I found on YouTube, but I shifted away from that and started writing songs a cappella instead. More recently, I’ve worked with a guitarist who created live instrumentation for some of my tracks, and right now, I’m looking for a producer who can take those unfinished ideas and elevate them into full pop hits.
Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!
I write from my own experiences and also from the perspectives of others in media, like movies and books. I also enjoy creating stories and writing songs based on those stories. Most of my upcoming songs come from personal experiences involving love, friendship, and depression, lmao.
What are your plans for 2026?
Book shows and release my first EP.
Have any shoutouts?
My mom and my creative director, Karina!
