An Interview with Lyfe Kodomo
In this interview, we sit down with Lyfe Kodomo—a Broward-born, Maryland-raised hip hop, R&B, and punk rock artist whose passion for music is as diverse as his influences. At 28 years old, he has written over a couple thousand songs, mixed and mastered 12 albums, and released his work on all digital streaming platforms, amassing more than 150K streams independently.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m a Broward-born, Maryland-raised artist working at the intersection of hip hop, R&B, and punk rock. Over the years, I’ve written thousands of songs, mixed and mastered 12 albums, and released them on all major DSPs. Independently, I’ve surpassed 150K streams.
Who or what inspired you to start making music, and when did you begin?
I started writing music in 10th grade after realizing I couldn’t maintain the grades needed to pursue sports. I quickly fell in love with the creative process and the endless possibilities of musical expression.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
My biggest challenge is marketing—especially in this new age of music and social media. I consider myself an artist’s artist and believe that raw talent should always outshine clout, but nowadays, it seems that a strong social media presence often takes precedence.
Do you have a favorite project or single you’ve released?
I fall in love with every new creation, so it’s impossible to single out just one project as my favorite.
Who are your inspirations, and what artists or bands do you listen to?
I draw inspiration from music spanning from the 1940s to today. As a lifelong student of music, I absorb influences from every genre and artist I encounter.
What is your process when working on a song?
I need to feel something deeply before I record. Once I find a beat that resonates with me, I speak directly from the heart without writing things down. Most songs are completed within an hour.
Can you tell us about your upcoming music and what inspired it?
I’m not entirely sure what’s next to be recorded, but recently, my muse has been a blend of success and heartbreak—a perfect combination that fuels my creativity.
What are your plans for 2025?
My plan for 2025 is simple: to change lives for the better. I strive to continue being a good person, regardless of whether I achieve mainstream fame.
Any shoutouts?
I love my family. Apologies to my exes, and hello to the world—I hope you’re ready!
