An Interview with Indigoje
At the place where poetry and music meet, you can find Indigoje. Indigo fell in love with writing poetry and music at the age of 15 and hasn’t looked back. With an eclectic set of influences, ranging from Slipknot to Lauren Hill, he has studied from the greats in nearly every genre. His upcoming album, and his sixth official project, “God Sent,” explores themes of self-reflection, personal growth, and the struggles of refining one’s character. Get to know the poet and recording artists in this exclusive interview with DCR.
Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
I am from California, and was originally raised in the south between Texas and Florida. Always been a poet that was headstrong on choosing his own path in life. I make music, design clothes, love car shows, and I am big into fitness.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
Around 15 years old my friend asked me to read and write a poem for a song intro. After that I became addicted to using my voice as an instrument to convey emotion and document my evolution into the person I want to become. Since then I have released 5 projects and am almost done with my sixth project now.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
Creating a sound that is simple yet has depth. I love to tell the whole story or message, most of the time just a piece of the message is the best way to connect. Also utilizing melodies instead of just delivering words the way they were written poetically.
What is your favorite project or single you have released?
Royal Shadow is my favorite album so far. It really captures the time of my life. I wrote it in the most cinematic way possible. Soundtrack to my own life.
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
My inspirations range from Slipknot to Lauren Hill. I am really most inspired by genuine emotion and creative concepts visually and audibly. Right now my playlist have a lot of old school music such as “the gap band” or I go into soulful sampled hip hop such as Larry June.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
It’s like deep diving into a pool that has unknown depth. I can work on a song for years or minutes. I never know until it’s complete where it’s headed. I paint on a canvas with lyrics first or write to the instrumentations.
Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!
My next album “God Sent” is my most vulnerable album yet really focused on the struggles of refining one’s character and embracing the struggles that defined me to be the man I am today. It is called “God Sent” which is meant to be a way to highlight a blessing but also a boastful selfish way of seeing one’s presence. I play with both concepts throughout the project humble and egocentric.
Have any shoutouts?
Shout out to my sister @iamchaneldrip on Instagram she really helped me stay focused and helped me refine my vision with music and my clothing brand. And, @cloud9alumni_ on Instagram–he was the first one who got me to record on microphone back in high school.
