Interview

An Interview with Tommy Wasabi

ByDCR July 17, 2024July 22, 2024

We had the exciting opportunity to chat with Tommy Wasabi, a multi talented rapper, singer, musician, and producer with roots in Budapest, Hungary, and Los Angeles, California. In this interview, Tommy shares his biggest challenge as an artist, his inspirations, upcoming music, and alot more.

Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?

I developed an interest in rapping, piano, and songwriting in my late 20s, driven by the intellectual and creative challenge and the desire to make something beautiful.

What is your biggest challenge as an artist?

Learning the many aspects of production (or finding someone to outsource them to). Getting noticed. Making music people actually want to hear. Finishing songs.

What is your favorite project or single you have released?

Go Go Go, Player for Life, and The Beauty of Life (an old track from 2016).

Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?

Jay Worthy, AZ, Fabolous, Tennis, The Smiths, and Marvin Gaye.

What’s the process behind working on a song like?

I’ll lay down a chord progression and loop it. That’ll be the harmonic basis of the song. Throw in some drums, usually from sample packs, sometimes I program them. Add different sounds and adornments here and there. Freestyle a melody over it and try to add a hook.

Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!

I’m releasing a handful of songs that have a more pop sound, with less rapping and more singing. I don’t even know if it fits in a certain genre.

What are your plans for 2024?

Do whatever is needed to promote the music, and test audience response. I want to focus on finishing songs QUICKLY instead of working on them for months on end.

Stay tuned for more music as Tommy continues to experiment with genres and find his sound. Check out his 5 song EP, Big In The ‘80s on Spotify or wherever you stream music.
