An Interview with Yung Deathstar
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Yung Deathstar, a 29-year-old rapper from Durham, North Carolina, who has been making waves in the underground music scene. Known for his raw and authentic sound, Yung Deathstar primarily shares his music on SoundCloud, with some of his older works available on Spotify and Apple Music. In this interview, he opens up about his journey into music, the challenges he faces as an independent artist, his creative process, and his plans for the future.
Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
Hey there! My name is Yung Deathstar, I’m 29 years old and am from Durham, North Carolina. You can find my music on SoundCloud mainly, but I have some older works on Spotify and Apple Music as well.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
I started making music when I was 15 (coincidentally the same age I started smoking weed) when I was bored in my high school study hall. I felt something within me and just started writing, deciding to record when I got home. My friends liked it and some even started rapping with me as well, but that’s how I started.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
My biggest challenge is being able to promote myself throughout multiple social media platforms. It costs money to advertise yourself fully, and although my parents support me, I still want to be able to get to the point where I can make a living off my music.
What is your favorite project or single you have released?
Probably “High and Enslaved.”
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
My big inspirations are Germ, $uicideboy$, Pouya, City Morgue & HAARPER. Pretty much listening to all of the above including Wiz Khalifa, Yung Yogi, Fat Nick, Juicy J, Three 6 Mafia, & Chief Keef.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
I typically just find a beat I can vibe to, then begin freestyling and formulating ideas. I try to be as concise as possible, breaking down my words and then writing to the beat. I mix and master myself as well, always lowering my voice pitch and adding things like chorus and reverb effects.
Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!
My upcoming music is going to be a new mixtape and a few new singles as well, what inspired me is just my everyday life and the game in general.
What are your plans for 2024?
I plan to start doing shows this year, dropping more music, and just overall having fun in general!
Have any shoutouts?
Shouts out Germ from G59.
