Who is Dumpstaphunk?

ByDCR February 23, 2024February 26, 2024
Dumpstaphunk

Dumpstaphunk stands as a powerhouse of funk from New Orleans, capturing the essence of the city’s vibrant music scene and pushing the boundaries of funk into new territories. Formed in 2003 by Ivan Neville, the band was initially created for a solo gig at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival. Ivan brought together a talented lineup, including his cousin Ian Neville on guitar, the dynamic duo of Nick Daniels and Tony Hall on bass and vocals, and drummer Raymond Weber, who has since left the band. This group quickly gained recognition, being voted “New Orleans’ Best Funk Band” in 2014 by OffBeat Magazine and Gambit Weekly, and has graced the stages of major music festivals across the country.

Dumpstaphunk’s music is deeply rooted in the rich musical heritage of the Neville family, with Ivan Neville being the son of Aaron Neville. The band’s sound is a continuation of the Neville Brothers’ and The Meters’ legacy, marked by complex syncopations, deep grooves, and a mix of musical styles that challenge the traditional boundaries of funk. The New York Times once described Dumpstaphunk as “the best funk band from New Orleans right now,” highlighting their unique ability to blend various musical influences while maintaining an unmistakably New Orleans groove.

Over the years, Dumpstaphunk has released several albums, including “Dirty Word” in 2013, featuring collaborations with artists like Trombone Shorty, Ani DiFranco, and Flea of the Red Hot Chili Peppers, and “Where Do We Go From Here” in 2021, which has been noted for its powerful and politically pointed themes. Their music often addresses social and political issues, blending insightful commentary with irresistible dance beats. The band’s ability to inspire both thought and movement has cemented their status as one of the most influential and respected acts in the New Orleans music scene.

The group’s lineup has evolved, with the original core members being joined by newer additions, including Alex Wasily on trombone, Ashlin Parker on trumpet, and Deven Trusclair on drums, further enriching their sound. Dumpstaphunk has not only carried forward the legacy of their forebears but has also redefined it, infusing their funk with a modern edge and a global perspective.

Dumpstaphunk represents more than just a band; they are a musical institution, a keeper of the New Orleans funk flame, and a bridge to the future of the genre. Their music resonates with fans across generations, and their live performances are celebrated for their energy, musicianship, and ability to bring people together through the power of funk.
