We got to speak with Tabla musician Aditya Kalyanpur. Read our interview to learn about Tabla—Indian drum music, what inspires him, and where he’s going with his music in the future.
Thanks for sitting down with us for this interview. Tell us a little more about yourself. When did you start making music?
I was drawn to tabla, the Indian percussion drum, at the tender age of 2.5 years. Since then, I have been walking this beautiful journey of making music.
Who inspired you to start making music?
You could say I was self inspired and born with an innate talent for rhythm and music. Fortunately, my parents identified this spark within me and helped me nurture this talent.
How would you describe your music style?
Indian Classical music, world music, and every genre wherever I have been able to contribute – be it film music, folk music, rap, pop, rock, etc.
Who are you listening to now?
Herbie Hancock and Arijit Singh.
What were you up to in 2021?
Given that we were grounded due to the pandemic, I was able to focus on our new band Renaissance Heart, which is comprised of multiple Grammy winner, Hila Plitmann, composer and guitar virtuoso, Shea Welsh, and myself. We recorded our first album and are currently in the last stages of mastering it. Additionally, I could also focus on teaching my students across the globe within the US, Canada, Australia, England and India. I have also been an adjunct professor at the prestigious Salem State University, based in Massachusetts.
How have you juggled successes in India, the United States, and globally?
I feel blessed that the audience has been very kind in showering and bestowing me with so much love and appreciation for my music. It’s the audience that inspires us and we continue to seek their blessings in this musical pursuit.
Do you have any tips or lessons for other artists or bands?
I feel it’s extremely crucial to think out of the box, embrace all genres, and experiment with all the innumerable possibilities that are out there. Finding your calling, voice, and identity is paramount I feel.
What are your plans for 2022?
Thankfully, things have opened up, hence looking forward to finishing my India tour and heading back home to play the concerts that await me!
Have any messages for the world?
Let’s pray with all to maintain peace, love, and kindness. If we all work as a team, the human race will continue to flourish and set the right example for the generations to come.
