An Interview with Obake
Coming out of Houston, Texas is an exciting independent recording artist by the name of Obake. Obake has a captivating and eclectic sound, releasing a unique blend of conscious hip hop, emo rap, and hyperpop. Learn more about the Houston-based artist in this exclusive interview.
How have you been? What have you been up to this past year?
I have been doing really well given the circumstances. Along with the crazy virus, I have had a lot of life events happen. Over the past year I have just been writing as a way of getting all the negative emotions out, and eventually decided to release some music.
How do you feel your music has changed over time?
I feel like my music has been evolving with each song I release. Whether it be the lyrics, mixing, and overall feel of the songs. When I first started writing I was more into lyrical rap, and now I feel I am in a weird blur between Emo Rap and Hyperpop. I try to focus on the emotions and feel of the songs. Rather than the genre.
What is your creative process like?
My creative process is pretty random. Some days things are just weighing on me a lot, and the only way to get past them is to write. Usually, I find a beat I like and try to convey the emotions I am feeling. I try to put the most genuine, vulnerable version of myself out there.
How has the COVID-19 pandemic affected your creativity and output?
At the start of COVID, I definitely experienced a block, since usually I go out for walks or explore to clear my head. As time went on I learned to accept that it’s the reality we are stuck with for now. After that, I feel more focused and determined to make music, since I have been stuck in my head more and more. Also knowing that others are dealing with the same feelings I am, inspires me to write and produce more.
What are your plans for 2021?
My plans for 2021 are to put out a few EPs, along with a ton of singles. Given the virus situation, I don’t know if touring will be an option but I would love to do so if I can. I have a short 4 song ep coming out, that is experimental for me. It is going to be shorter, softer love songs since I have been feeling those emotions lately. After that, I plan on going back to my normal “genre” of music, with an ep and tons of singles.
Appreciate you talking with us again. Any upcoming music you want to promote?
Yes, I would like to promote a single I have coming out with Xx$0uRpuppy. Along with my soft love song EP, Love Sick, dropping Feb. 15th as a late Valentineโs Day present!
Any messages for the world?
Be you, don’t let anyone dictate what your actions are. You are the main character in your story, and to not pursue something you love out of fear of others is crazy. Live every day for you.
