Punk Is Not Dead

Spike Polite & Sewage

Spike Polite & Sewage, a band deeply rooted in the raw spirit of New York City’s underground punk scene, has released a new EP titled “Punk Not Dead.” The band, led by the legendary Spike Polite, has a rich history that intertwines with the iconic locations of New York’s Lower East Side, like CBGBs, Tompkins Square Park, and the Bowery. This area, known as the birthplace of punk, has been a hotbed of civil unrest and creative expression, and it’s this environment that has shaped the music of Spike Polite & Sewage. Purchase the EP via Solid Bass Records.

The band’s journey began with Spike Polite’s involvement in the May Day 1991 Riots at Tompkins Square Park. The incident, covered in a local Newsday newspaper with Spike’s photo, was pivotal in the formation of the band. Originally named HumYn Sewage, the band was known for its punk shows and participation in events like the ‘Punk Rock Beer Olympics.’

HumYn Sewage eventually evolved into Sewage NYC and then to its current incarnation, Spike Polite & Sewage NYC. The band’s lineup has seen several changes over the years, with the current members including Spike Polite on vocals and guitar, Michelle Shocked on bass and vocals, Anthony Romano on guitar and gang vocals, and Beast on drums.

Spike Polite & Sewage’s music is characterized by fast-paced rhythms, socially conscious lyrics, and a unique blend of punk rock that reflects the band’s diverse influences. The “Punk Not Dead” EP, produced by Ted Sabety for Solid Bass Records, is a powerful mix of punk, rock, and industrial noise, encapsulating the band’s ethos of challenging the status quo and representing the voice of the disenfranchised.

Spike Polite & Sewage has captivated audiences with their dynamic performances in cities like Pittsburgh, Nashville, and Austin. Their music, as gritty and honest as the streets of New York, continues to inspire and resonate with fans of punk music. The “Punk Not Dead” EP is not just a collection of songs; it’s a statement about the enduring vibrancy of punk music and its ability to speak to the societal issues of the times.
