If you’ve been on TikTok anytime in the past year, it’s likely you’ve heard the infectious whistle melody on Riko Rose’s debut song, aptly titled Whistle. The Rhode Island artist may draw comparisons to New York drill artists, but he’s a unique artist who’s about to see the limelight. With over 10 million streams on Spotify, Riko Rose’s success is undeniable. We interviewed Riko Rose about his come-up, the process behind creating Whistle, his next release “Bestfriend”, and a lot more.
Thanks for chatting with us Riko Rose. What have you been up to this year?
This year I’ve been working on consistently dropping singles. Making songs everybody will love and growing.
Where are you from and how has that shaped who you are?
I’m from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Born and raised. Where I’m from it’s not easy to make it out, growing up here made me who I am. The hate here is stronger than anywhere else but it won’t and it’s never stopped me from beating the odds.
Tell us a little bit about the creative process behind making your hit single Whistle.
Whistle was a song I made in 30 minutes. I texted a videographer the same day after recording it. The idea just randomly came to me one day. I just acted on impulse and shot my shot and it followed through. I knew it would be catchy and draw attention, I put it on TikTok and it went up.
How did things change for you after the release of Whistle?
After Whistle, I was speaking with many labels, and more opportunities were coming my way. The song itself changed my life for the better.
Single after single you release hits hundreds of thousands of views. Do you have a project in the works?
I have one … in the works right now called “Bestfriend”. The video will be dropped this September. But as for an EP or mixtape that will come more down the line.
What makes your music different from other artists in New York?
My music is different from other New York artists because I don’t sound the same. There are similarities there but if you really know drill music you can tell I’m different from the rest.
Who inspires you to make music?
My family and the people I care about. As much as I love music and doing music, I do it for a better life for all of us.
What artist would your dream collaboration be with?
I have no dream collaborations, to be honest, but I’m open to working with anybody.
What are your plans for the rest of this year?
My plans for the rest of the year are to master my craft, even more, to do more music with artists willing to work with me and grow.
Any messages for the world and everyone watching you?
I love all my fans and everybody who’s supported and continues to support my music today. Also, most of the haters will eventually switch sides.
