Margot White is a talented singer and songwriter based in London, United Kingdom. Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?
Hi! I am Margot White. I’m originally from Austin, Texas, and am now based in London.
When did you start making music?
I started making music while attending Goldsmith’s University in London where I was fortunate to collaborate with producer Francesco Marseglia. This period of time allowed me to really start understanding the entire process of writing, recording, and producing music because before that I was only performing acoustic versions of the songs I was writing.
Who inspired you to start making music?
Bob Dylan and a lot of other bands from the 1960s. I just noticed myself hearing them and being so excited about what their music felt like that it poured over into my own musical expression.
How would you describe your music style?
My music style is inspired lyrically by beat poetry as well as poets like Baudelaire, Stéphane Mallarmé, and Shelley. Musically I reference a lot of classical melodies by a pretty varied group of composers like Bach, Debussy, and Schoenberg. Additionally, I have been writing a lot for KPop in the last nine months, and I’ve noticed this has influenced my melodic sensibility as well. So essentially I would sum my music up as a bit literary, mixed with a constant exploration of melody in the context of modern production styles like A.G. Cook, Danny Harle, and Dan Carey.
Who are you listening to now?
I really love a New York band called Geese and I’m really into Caroline Polachek’s work in its totality. Her performance style in addition to the music and artistic vision is very Kate Bush, who I also reference a lot. I’m listening to a lot of soundtracks as well, like all of the Batman soundtracks, and some Gregorian chant albums as I’ve been collaborating with Robert Koch of Foam and Sand on a thrilling project involving sound healing and some tones I’ve created for synthesizers.
What’s your best project or single so far?
I released music after it, but my track Midnight Sun is my favorite so far.
Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?
I’m currently reworking a lot of my approaches for releasing music, as COVID was a beautiful opportunity to pause and just rewire a lot of my creative process. So, yes, but I’m sifting through a lot of demos and seeing which one is speaking the right message for me right now.
