Owshan is a brand new artist that you need to be paying attention to. With her debut single, Cupid’s Arrow, releasing on February 14th. That’s Valentine’s Day! We sat down for an interview to discuss her upcoming project, biggest challenge as a musician, and more.
Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
I was born in Jamaica, currently living in Canada. I like to travel and try new adventures. As a creative, some of my hobbies include music, fashion, interior design, designing furniture, homes, landscaping, hair, style, art, and more. In my free time, sometimes I enjoy a quiet life, go out or, when possible, travel to the beach. My personality is similar to water and like the mysterious ocean. Consisting of intense and gentle waves of creativity and style with an understanding of life’s flow. The mixing genres of music and things is due to my admiration for the universal, versatile, beauty of life, art, and the universe.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
The inspiration is creativity and imagination. It started in childhood. As children, we all have the greatest adventures in our minds. We create by relating to events in our surroundings or dreams in our heads. The ability to demonstrate my creative imagination or perspective through songwriting and poetry in music that people can relate to and enjoy is a rewarding gift.
What’s been your biggest challenge as a musician?
The biggest challenge was having to be a jack of all trades. Juggling everything the business of music and art requires would sometimes take away from the joy of making music and art.
What’s your favorite single you’re planning to release on your album?
The single I enjoy most is called Elevat8. It’s a positive song intended to inspire listeners to build and be the greatest version of themselves in this journey of love and life.
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill are both inspiring artists. There’s a respect for their creative originality, uniqueness, and difference.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
The process is to tell a story. The purpose is to have listeners envision the story in their minds through imagination. To take them from one adventure and experience to the next with every song.
Tell me about your upcoming album and what inspired you to create it!
The album is about a fictional but still relatable love story. It was inspired by travel and adventure. The eight main songs are different love life trips that take listeners on an interesting journey from the past to the future, the before and the after. The instrumental vibe of the album is much like my art as Owshan with a touch of the ocean. It has a very slight wave of rap battle sound clash mixed with the love for different genres of music and cultures. There are also mysteries to discover in each song, just for fun.
What are your plans for the rest of this year?
The remainder of the year will be used to plan and continue to promote and develop my music, fashion, and art.
