An Interview with INY

INY

In this exclusive interview, we delve into the vibrant world of INY, a Nigerian immigrant turned multifaceted artist in the United States. From her roots as a ballerina to her venture into the world of music and entrepreneurship, INY opens up about her journey, inspirations, and future plans.

Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.

I’m a Nigerian immigrant who moved to the United States when I was about four years old. I started out as a ballerina, dabbling in dancing, including contemporary, modern, and tap. I’ve been singing for as long as I can remember. I love business and entrepreneurship and have my own swimwear brand. I love music too!

Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?

My musical inspirations as an artist are Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, Usher, and Monica. I started making music in college, exploring my creativity and reigniting my creative interests. What inspired me to make music was listening to the current music out there and not really finding the sound or the vibe I was looking for, so I decided to create it for myself.

What is your biggest challenge as an artist?

My biggest challenges as an artist have been both mental health and financial challenges. To be a successful artist, you need to be stable inside and out. You have to stay healthy to support yourself and also be creative enough to create new work and be inspired.

Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?

My biggest inspirations musically are Beyoncé, Nicki Minaj, and Monica. I’m currently listening to Mariah Carey and Usher.

What’s the process behind working on a song like?

Now that I’m singing more than rapping, I work with my vocal coach several times a week, and he really helps me and points out things I could be doing better. I first freestyle to a song and then send it over to my songwriter to have the melodies and lyrics refined. Finally, I add back in vocals and harmonies to get the perfect R&B pop sound.

Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!

Growing up, I really loved the crossover blend of hip-hop and R&B. But right now, there’s not too much hip-hop R&B genre. I personally love pop music, so I wanted to make a blend of R&B and pop music that I haven’t really heard out there, R&B, pop!

What are your plans for 2024?

My plans for 2024 are to consistently release quality music and music videos and establish myself as an artist, musically, lyrically, and creatively.

Have any shoutouts?

I want to shout out my mom, the rest of my family, and my friends for always believing in me and supporting me throughout the years.

INY’s story is a testament to the power of resilience, creativity, and the pursuit of one’s passions. As she navigates the challenges and triumphs of her artistic journey, her determination to carve out her unique sound in the music industry is truly inspiring. In 2024, INY is poised to make an indelible mark on the world of music.
