We recently had the pleasure of chatting with Envy, also known as NVM Nvrmnd, a talented artist hailing from Los Angeles, California. Envy creates music that speaks to the soul and aims to spark emotions that can take listeners to another reality. He draws inspiration from personal experiences, and his lyrics revolve around topics such as mental health, toxic love, and life struggles. Envy’s artist name, “Nevermind,” reflects his desire to ease anxiety and distress, a sentiment that is close to his heart as he battles anxiety himself. Hey, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
My name is Envy. I am from a small town in Michigan, and I currently live in Los Angeles, California. I create music to spark emotions and hopefully can take you to another reality. Lyrically, I speak on toxic love, mental illness, abandonment issues, drug use, and life struggles.
My artist name is NVM Nvrmnd, pronounced “Envy-Em-Nevermind” The meaning behind “never mind” is to ease someone from distress and anxiety. I battle with anxiety and want to help those who also battle anxiety, ease it. Besides making music I love getting tattoos, creating art, being outside in nature, playing video games, and reading books. Inspiring artists to me are The Weeknd, 6lack, XXXTentacion, Lil peep, and Kurt Cobain of Nirvana.
I love all genres of music. My favorite ones would be R&B, alternative, country, and pop punk. I grew up around music, but I wasn’t fully tapped into understanding my purpose for it and taking it seriously until 2022. In 2018 I released my first EP. I was very back and forth between music and quitting up until 2022. Now I’m here, because I see a bigger purpose, I want to spread a message and speak for those who can’t and inspire others.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
I’ve always been into music since I was a child. When I was a younger kid I had a struggle with stuttering. I had a speech problem. I found that singing lyrics as I read them or rapped them helped me get better with my speech.
I never tried to tap into music fully until 2016. what inspired me was life experiences. I found it as a way to release my mental struggles with creativity. I bought my first microphone and had Garage Band, I began messing around. I started going to studios and paying for studio time later that year.
I then stopped again, I was very off and on with going. it began to get expensive. I started to slowly invest in my own studio. I bought each piece of equipment over a span of time. I then started watching YouTube videos on how to use it all. and locked in for quite some time trying to find my sound, once I felt comfortable enough I began releasing music again. In late 2022 I started to release and remain consistent.
What is your biggest challenge as an artist?
Marketing, reaching the right audience, and organizing my releases.
What is your favorite project or single you have released?
Flesh and Bones or Lost at Sea.
Who are your inspirations? What artists or bands are you listening to?
The Weeknd, XXXTentacion, 6lack, Lil Peep, Nirvana, and Paramore.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
I use creating music like journaling, I just say what’s on my mind when I’m feeling it and then I listen back and reflect. Sometimes I write. Every song is totally different. I go off the energy.
Tell me about your upcoming music and what inspired you to create it!
Right now I’m releasing singles, mostly about toxic love. That’s been consuming most of my life lately. Then I have a project ready for October that is solely based on internal battles, it’s very emotional and vulnerable and inspired by my soul.
What are your plans for 2023?
To release a single per month. Then, release a project in October.
