Retro Speq is a trio hailing from St. Petersburg, FL. They originally met in high school and formed a singing group inspired by artists like Prince, The Ojays, New Edition, and their other favorite singers and creatives. Fast forward to today and alongside producer Jimmy “Slam” Jones, they put together their first album under Retro Speed, releasing the first single, Craze’, earlier this year. Get to know the RNB powerhouse in this interview.
Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?
We are Retro Speq we’re from St. Petersburg Florida.
When did you start making music?
Since the Early 90s.
Who inspired you to start making music?
Some of us got inspired by family members, friends, relatives, church, choir involvement also with a dynamic mixture of artists including Prince, New Edition, James Brown, Daryl Hall & John Oats, Earth Wind and Fire, Commissioned etc.
How would you describe your music style?
Our style is a groove funky oriented feel with classic RnB, and Pop mixture with current sounds that take you on a feel good hiatus.
Who are you listening to now?
Right now we listen to The Weekend, SZA, Doja Cat, Dua Lipa, and Roddy Rich.
What’s your best project or single so far?
(Our upcoming album is our) best project so far. We can’t really say what is gonna be our best single because we have a least 5 that we can’t wait to see the response from each one.
Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?
We have Craze’ out now which is getting great reviews so far and it’s only been out 3 weeks. But the one to look out for is titled Heaven. It’s gonna touch many people.
