An Interview with Cristal Carrington

Cristal-Carrington

Cristal Carrington is a recording artist from Hempstead, NY. Cristal has been writing since 2014, but began releasing her own songs in 2020. On some of her tracks, Cristal Carrington captures the essence of the nightlife. Blending stellar vocals, pop synths, funk, drum and bass, techno, and house to create great dance music. Additionally, she creates unique alt-pop and rap music. She distinguishes herself from other artists with her authentic music.

Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?

My name is Cristal Carrington, and I’m from Hempstead, New York.

When did you start making music?

In 2014, I started a project called Radio Rukus, which was a compilation CD featuring artists from around the globe. I was the host of the CD, but I also spit a rap at the end. After that, I knew I wanted to do a techno album, but I never followed through. After bouncing back from a horrible situation in 2020, I decided to channel my feelings into music, and the Revenge album was born.

Who inspired you to start making music?

I don’t think anyone inspired me to start making music, but there are people I admire whose work I enjoy. Greats like Michael Jackson and pop icons like Lady Gaga are always inspirational.

How would you describe your music style?

I have an eclectic music style. I like to call myself a genreless artist because I know how to write across music genres. I don’t want to pigeonhole myself into hip hop because that is so A-typical of what you think a black girl would be doing so I merged into pop, dance, and Latin Pop. I don’t hold myself to boundaries regarding music.

Who are you listening to now?

Cristal Carrington. I don’t have time to listen to other’s music mostly because I don’t want my sound diluted. I respect all rappers who write their rhymes without teams though. The game is rigged, unfortunately, so I’m not sure if I’m admiring the artist or their ghostwriter.

Also because I continuously stay in the writing and editing process I typically don’t have time to indulge in a lot of new works from other people. I don’t want to hear something and then try to unintentionally incorporate it into my music. I’d rather just be organic so if I come up with anything it’s my thoughts and typically when I find that I write similar to a certain person I usually will ask myself what would their writers write and that’s usually how I get a song penned.

What’s your best project or single so far?

I like Summer and See You Dance. Despite being different, Summer is more R&B, whereas See You Dance is Latin Pop. But both are light, fun, and good for a great workout or party.

Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?

Never Want To See You Cry, Dance With You, and Bobby are just a few. I’m always writing and I’m constantly releasing new music. New videos to look out for would be Scorpions Alive, it’s pretty spooky.

Have any shoutouts?

Shoutout to everybody that takes the time out to listen to my songs. I bring you a little bit of every vibe so it is a choose-your-own-adventure experience.
