An Interview with Terricola

Terricola-Costa-Rican-Emo-Rap

We had the opportunity to sit down with San Jose, Costa Rica based recording artist Terricola to chat about his biggest influences, favorite singles, playing in an alternative emo band, and more.

Hey! Introduce yourself. Where are you from?

I’m from San Jose, Costa Rica. My artist name is Terricola, it means Earthling, and my human name is Kenny.

When did you start making music?

Around 10 years ago. I had an alternative emo band named Diger, we played shows in Mexico, Nicaragua, the US and hundreds of local shows, including opening for bands like Title Fight, The Wonder Years and The Menzingers to name a few.

Who inspired you to start making music?

Matt Pryor of The Getup Kids, Mike Kinsella of American Football and of course, Blink 182 and every project Tom Delonge has been a part of.

How would you describe your music style?

My music is inspired by late 90s and early 2000s alternative emo bands and the lo-fi hip hop movement. It is a mix of my early music influences blended together with modern pop music.

Who are you listening to now?

A whole bunch of Joji, Charli XCX, 93FEETOFSMOKE, Guccihighwaters, 9Tails/Sewerperson, Fats’e, Bad Bunny, the Spain and Argentina melodic trap scene, and I recently got into 100 gecs.

What’s your best project or single so far?

My latest 2 singles “Mátame” and “Veneno” since they both represent the path I’m heading to, musically speaking.

Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?

I have a song with English lyrics called Devil and it’s kinda like a Sad Boi Pop Punk song with an RnB esthetic. Which is dropping early 2021.

Have any shout outs?

My producers, Afi Romero and Rod Murillo, who are part of the collective System Overload, which produces songs for my project and other new artists here in San José.
