Coming out of Luxembourg is an incredibly talented 16 year old producer and recording artist named Delto. The spotlight recently shined on Delto with the release of their infectious collaboration with Ericdoa and Glasear, Problem, which recently placed on Spotify’s Fresh Finds and Fresh Finds: Hip Hop editorial playlists. Now a key player in the hyperpop scene, Delto is set to take 2021 by storm. We had the chance to sit down with the European artist to discuss their inspirations, biggest challenges, favorite artists, and more.
Hey Delto, thanks for chatting with us. Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m Delto, I’m a 16 year old producer from Luxembourg. I’ve been making music since I was about 7 or 8 years old. I mainly produce hyperpop but also like to branch out sometimes for fun.
Who or what inspired you to start making music? And, when did you start?
My dad was probably like my first inspiration. He used to be a DJ and so I grew up around old equipment and we had this one synth patch in particular that was like this metal box and there was one sound on it that just hypnotized me as a kid and from then on I was always interested in production and how it worked. I’ve also been into different ways of making music since I was younger, I played piano when i was about 6, and also a bit of guitar, so that’s like another factor that got me into actually producing seriously
What’s been your biggest challenge as a musician?
Coming up with consistently new and original ideas is probably the hardest. I can make the same beat over and over and they’re not bad but they’ve got nothing behind them that’s actually interesting so I think expanding the things I make is hard for me but at the same time the challenge is what makes it fun!
Who are you listening to now?
A lot of Brakence at the moment, I think his music is insanely inspirational, Thundercat, The Garden, Quasimoto and of course people from the scene like d0llywood, Angelus, Twikipedia, Ericdoa, and Glaive’s new album! Also, I’ve really been into experimental soul stuff from the 60s and 70s like Roy Ayers and Cortex.
What’s your best project or single so far?
I’d say either Problem or Backdoor because they feel like the most complete projects I’ve made when it comes to mixing and production, I’ve got some better projects that I’m still working on. Also,I’m really proud of the work I’ve done on Self Sabotage.
What’s the process behind working on a song like?
Honestly just doing whatever until I get something that sounds good. I never sit down with the intention of making music. I just open FL randomly and start drawing patterns and making synths and then turning those into drops and then turning that drop into a full song with structure. Usually I’ll fidget around with a beat for about a week after I finish it, just tweaking little things here and there and adding new sounds.
Your new song, Problem, featuring Ericdoa is blowing up right now. How did the concept for the song come about?
Well the beat was made way earlier than the song. It was when Glasear sent me a couple loops for the first time and there was this one loop which really caught my attention which is the loop you hear at the start of the song, and so I played over the melody with these bells that you can hear in the drop, finished the beat, sent it to Ericdoa and Eric sent me back the hook for it. After that it was like radio silence for that song for months until I found it on my desktop and asked Eric if I could finish it with my own verse and he agreed. So the song’s definitely had a very long journey from start to finish.
Any upcoming releases from you to look out for?
Not really anything set, I’ve got like 2 solid song ideas which I think I’ll finish within the next week or two with some cool features hopefully!
What are your plans for 2021?
Just keep doing what I’m doing I guess, I don’t really plan forwards but definitely still making music!
